wimmin

wimmin
wimmin
a phonetic spelling of women, is recorded in facetious contexts from the early part of the 20c. It was adopted by feminists in the 1980s because it dispensed with the element -men, and has achieved a limited currency in contexts where female status is being underlined or highlighted in some (often ironic) way:

• Why are these (ignorant) gay men (and sadly sometimes wimmin) stereotyping gayness? —Pink Paper, 1990

• Anyone, Roisin. That includes adolescent boys, wimmin, transgender hang gliders, and people of all ethnic, religious, social, political backgrounds and persuasions —Sunday Business Post, IrishE 2004 [OEC].
